Each year, the Texas Health Information Management Association (TxHIMA) awards several education scholarships to students who demonstrate academic achievement and commitment to the field of health information management in Texas. TxHIMA promotes education and recruitment of new students as critical success factors for the HIM profession.
TxHIMA supports the professional development of individuals engaged in the undergraduate study of health information technology, health information management, and graduate study in health information management or related fields. All scholarship recipients will be recognized at the TxHIMA Annual Conference held each June.
All applications are submitted online. The TxHIMA Board of Directors makes the final award decision. Applicants not selected will be notified, and winners not able to attend the Annual Conference will receive awards via mail no later than 30 days post-conference.
Evelyn L. Cockrell Memorial Scholarship
Focus: Financial Need & Commitment to HIM
This scholarship honors the legacy of Evelyn L. Cockrell by supporting students who demonstrate financial need and a genuine commitment to pursuing a career in health information management at a Texas institution.
Eligibility
- Currently enrolled in a CAHIIM-accredited HIT or HIA program at a Texas institution
- Active AHIMA student member with TxHIMA designated as your Component State Association
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Applicant self-attestation of eligibility required at time of submission

TxHIMA HIA/HIT Scholarship
Focus: Students Entering Final Year of Study
Two scholarships awarded annually — one to an HIA student and one to an HIT student — who are actively enrolled and beginning their final year in a CAHIIM-accredited program. This scholarship invests in students committed to completing their degree and entering the Texas HIM workforce.
Eligibility
- Actively enrolled and in good standing, beginning the final year (summer or fall) of a CAHIIM-accredited HIA or HIT program at a Texas institution
- Active AHIMA student member with TxHIMA designated as your Component State Association
- Texas resident (minimum 1 year) or enrolled in a Texas institution
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Applicant self-attestation of eligibility required at time of submission

Essay Attestation: At the bottom of your essay, include the following signed statement in your own handwriting: “This essay is my own work and has not been written, composed, or edited for me by anyone.”
Review Process: All applications are reviewed by the TxHIMA Board of Directors. Identifying information is removed prior to review to ensure anonymity and objectivity. The Board reserves the right to decline awarding a scholarship in any given year at their discretion. Award recipients will be notified prior to the TxHIMA Annual Conference and formally recognized during the awards ceremony. Documentation supporting eligibility attestations may be requested at the finalist stage.
